Matariki Lesson !!

Today Room 7 & Room 9 had the opportunity to go to Te Oro for a Matariki Lesson with these really nice people. We left school around 9:00am and drove off, on a bus to Te Oro which is in Glen Innes. When we got to Te Oro we had to take off our shoes to show respect. Not gonna lie it was kinda stinky haha. After taking our shoes off we had a small Powhiri because we were the guest coming into their little Marae. The girls had to go in the front and the boys at the back. While we were walking in we saw these cool art and creative craft made from those people. After we all went in, We had to sit down on the mat.

After that we had these beautiful teachers introducing themselves to us. There was about 14 of them. They were all so kind to us and some of them were funny as well. After introducing themselves, they talked about all the arts and crafts in the room and how they made it. They made all the carvings from the Kauri tree and the Totara tree as well.
Most of the people there made all those creative things on the walls.

A few minutes after, we all got into groups of eights and went our separate ways. There was three sections we had to split into. There was Weaving, Clay making and painting. I went to the weaving section which was really fun. We learnt have to make stars out of Harakeke. The boys and girls had to split into two groups so it would be easier. At first it was more harder but then our teacher made it easier for us to make.

After making our products it was time to finish. Our teacher had to pick four sensible people to present what we made. Then we all showed our creations to the whole class. Then we had to thank the people for letting us have a great time at Te Oro.

Te Oro today was a really great experience for Room 7 and Room 9 to learn and create heaps of things from back in the days. Hopefully we go again next time !!
